In late 2008, China’s State Council approved Hengqin as an experimental New Area, aiming to increase foreign trade and investment, plus “strengthen the cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in service industry and high and new technology.”Hengqin is a 106.46-square-kilometer coastal island tucked into the southern corner of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province.
Supported by the State Council, Hengqin enjoys more preferential policies than other previous economic zones in Guangzhou. The major projects include:
- Shizimen CBD - Central Business District
- Hengqin Finance Industry Service Base - Compose of 18 office buildings, 1 finance street service center and 1 catering center building
- Chimelong International Ocean Resort - A world-class, large, comprehensive tourism resort
- Xiangzhou Culture Street - A large cultural, tourism project invested in by Zhuhai Jingfu Tourism Development
- The New Campus of the University of Macau – A key project of cooperation between Guangdong and Macao
- Gas energy supply project of Hengqin Island – A reliable and economical power supply of electricity and water for the whole island
