Post Election Statement from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, along with our 2,800 members, extends heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on their recent electoral victory.

We look forward to building a constructive partnership with the new Canadian government. It is mutually beneficial to restore and strengthen dialogue between the Hong Kong SAR, mainland China, and Canada. This collaboration is essential for enhancing trade, investment, and communication across the Indo-Pacific, aligning with the shared interests of both Canada and Hong Kong

In an increasingly interconnected world, we confront common challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and public health crises. Additionally, we must navigate the complexities of artificial intelligence, technological disruptions, and geopolitical tensions within a rapidly evolving global trade system.

In Canada, key issues such as affordable housing, immigration, inter-provincial trade barriers, economic productivity, tax relief for the middle class, and diversifying trading partnerships resonate strongly. Similarly, Hong Kong faces many comparable local challenges. Addressing these structural issues within our respective economies through trade and commerce may help bridge previously perceived divides and foster further collaboration.

Our Chamber, representing over 2,800 individual and 300 corporate members, is uniquely positioned to collaborate with governments and businesses, fostering understanding, connectivity, and international investment opportunities that benefit Canadian and Hong Kong enterprises alike. We advocate for diversifying Canada’s trade markets, demystifying opportunities in Asia, and leveraging the strong ties between Canadians in Hong Kong and their counterparts in Canada.

We aim to showcase Canada’s diverse, world-class talent and facilitate mutually beneficial opportunities in key sectors such as finance, natural resources, agriculture, education, technology, and tourism, thereby enhancing both Hong Kong and Canada’s presence in Asia’s dynamic markets.

Hong Kong, a proven reliable business partner,  serves as a vital gateway for financial collaboration, trade, and strategic market expansion across Asia. As a unique "Super-Connector," it provides unparalleled access to regional growth engines and global capital flows.

We encourage the new Canadian government to focus on these common interests and leverage Hong Kong’s strengths—its robust legal framework, free trade environment, and rich talent pool—to diversify Canada’s economic partnerships. Engaging with Asia’s high-growth economies will help secure a resilient economic future for both Canada and Hong Kong while advancing shared social and commercial goals.

For over 48 years, our Chamber has nurtured a vibrant bilateral business community, acting as Canada’s trusted bridge to Asia. We warmly invite Prime Minister Carney to visit Hong Kong at his earliest convenience, where he can experience the vibrancy of our 300,000-strong Canadian diaspora and our network of over 186,000 Canadian university alumni—a testament to the enduring ties that foster prosperity for both regions. Together, we are prepared to transform this pivotal moment into meaningful actions that promote socioeconomic growth for generations to come.
