In Memory of John W. Crawford, CanChamHK Governor

In Memory of John W. Crawford

John W. Crawford (May 4, 1942 – May 13, 2025)

A True Leader who will forever be part of our community

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong honors the life and contributions of our governor, John W. Crawford, a distinguished business leader and devoted community builder who called Hong Kong home for more than 40 years. His legacy spans professional excellence, institutional leadership, and transformative educational initiatives.

John was among the founding partners of Ernst & Young Hong Kong, where his 25-year career included serving as Chairman of the Audit Division and later as Vice Chairman. His guidance proved invaluable to many of Hong Kong's leading corporations, and his professional standing was recognized in 1997 with his appointment as a Justice of the Peace.

A true institution builder, John played a key role in establishing multiple organizations that continue to thrive today. He was a founding member of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in 1976 and later co-founded CanCham Macao in 2004. His civic contributions included helping to launch both UNICEF Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Institute of Directors.

One of John's greatest passions was education. He played a pivotal role in the early development of the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS), spearheading the creation of its HK$500 million campus, including funding, design, and construction. In 2002, he co-founded The International School of Macao, an institution embodying the unique qualities and culture of international education. His educational leadership further extended to developing the International School of Sanya in Hainan and establishing the Canadian International School of Phnom Penh in Cambodia from 2014 onward  - institutions all celebrated for their exemplary Canadian educational standards.

John's passing leaves a void in Hong Kong's business community, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and philanthropic circles. His pragmatic approach, leadership, dedication to institution-building, and commitment to education will remain his enduring legacy.

A private family service has been held.

With sincerest condolences,
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong
