Ranked among the top 35 universities in the world and recognised as a leader in Asia Pacific research, The University of British Columbia has a long history of engagement in China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, among others. UBC is the only Canadian member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, a consortium of 56 leading universities from 19 economies in the Pacific Rim. The office in Hong Kong engages in alumni relations, development, student recruitment and builds relations with universities, businesses and governments in the Asia Pacific Region. In 1999, UBC set up an interim office in H.K. to serve alumni and UBC partners with Asia Pacific activities, and to advise and recruit prospective undergraduate and graduate students. This office has achieved its goal of building a solid foothold in the Asia Pacific Region. Recognising the need for a more meaningful presence in the region, UBC has created an office with expanded geographic scope, functions and capabilities.
