About the Event:

The overall aim of this new Series is to raise the awareness of and support to social entrepreneurship in our business community. The launch event will focus firstly on a brief introduction to the global and local trends in the development of social enterprise by Prof. Mark Richard Hayllar. This will be followed by the presentation of three business models.
 
Patrick Cheung of "Dialogue in the Dark" will explain how this business model was started and brought into Hong Kong. He will further discuss the strategies he has adopted to keep the business sustainable and financially feasible for further expansion. Doris Leung of the “home grown” Diamond Cab will discuss the driving force behind her social mission. She will also share the challenges of keeping this “non-profit” business going and the skills she adopts to seek support and sponsorship. Then, Professor George Woo will introduce the “PolyVision” Eyecare Venture and explain further the philosophy of “Doing Good Well”. He will further discuss the venture’s business model and how this small business is designed to bring about social impact in the process of delivering benefits to the users.

About the Speakers:

Patrick Cheung
Chairman, Hong Kong Social Entrepreneurship F0rum/Founder and Chairman, DiD HK Limited /Founder and CEO of Jade Club Ltd and Onward Community Healthcare Services Ltd. 

Mr. Cheung is a serial-entrepreneur.  He started his career working for a multinational and built the Asian business for the company.  In 1992, he founded his own company on flexible packaging business in China, and grew it into a leading player in China. At the age of 50, Mr. Cheung sold his company and devoted full time in promoting social entrepreneurship in Hong Kong and China. He is the current chairman of Hong Kong Social Entrepreneurship Forum, the leading social entrepreneurship platform in Hong Kong. He successfully brings Dialogue in the Dark to Hong Kong. Currently, Mr. Cheung devotes most of his time now in launching social enterprises aiming at bringing innovations to elder care sector. He is the founder and CEO of Jade Club, a social enterprise specialized in provision of elderly programs. He is also the chairman of Onward Community healthcare Service Ltd. 

Mr. Cheung graduated from Hong Kong University with B.Sc. Degree in Industrial Engineering.  He had attended the PMD program at Harvard Business School, and the Management Training from INSEAD.  He also holds a master degree in international relation and public affair from Hong Kong University. Mr. Cheung is currently pursuing his DPA degree at University of Hong Kong focusing his research in Elderly Care policy in Hong Kong. 
 

Doris (Shuk Yi) Leung
Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Diamond Cab (HK) Limited

Doris Leung is the Founder and CEO of Diamond Cab and Director of Social Innovation at Social Ventures Hong Kong. Doris is a journalist turned social entrepreneur, with 16 years of past experience working with i-Cable as a TV host and reporter. Having experienced difficulties travelling with her wheelchair-bound mother, Doris was determined to set up her own social enterprise – Diamond Cab, introducing 5 wheelchair-accessible taxis to Hong Kong in 2011. Diamond Cab was established with a social mission to provide much-needed, quality point-to-point transport to the disabled, elderly and able-bodied, and has a team of 17 dedicated drivers with a caring heart to promote well being of the wheelchair-bound. 

Doris was awarded the Young Social Entrepreneur Award 2011, Capital Leaders of Excellence 2011, Finalist (Asia Pacific) of Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards 2013, The Purpose Economy Asia 100 2014, Hong Kong Winner of Chivas The Venture 2015 and JESSICA Most Successful Women 2015.

Professor George Woo

Professor George Woo received his Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from the University of Waterloo in Canada. He obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in physiological optics from Indiana University in the U.S. He is a Fellow and a Diplomate in Low Vision of the American Academy of Optometry. 

After graduating and completing the licensing requirements for practice, he became an optometrist with the Canadian Red Cross Society before moving to Indiana University to undertake graduate studies and various teaching and research posts. In 1970, he joined the University of Waterloo as a faculty member, rising to full Professor in 1980. During his tenure at Waterloo from 1970 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1996, he took up many visiting and consulting appointments at several institutions. From 1987 to 1989, he was the founding Head and Professor of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In January 1997, Professor Woo was appointed Chair Professor of Optometry and Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also Honorary Professor at China’s Sun Yat-sen University, Tianjin Medical University and Wenzhou Medical University. 

Professor Woo has served on numerous local and international optometry, health and research committees. He is Past President of the World Council of Optometry and the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry, and President of the Hong Kong Contact Lens Research Association. He is currently the Secretary General of the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry. He served as a board member of the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2011.

About the Moderator:

Mark Richard Hayllar
PhD., Director, Project Flame; Visiting Associate Professor, City University of Hong Kong

Mark is the current Director and co-founder of Project Flame Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship@CityU. Designed to foster social innovation and entrepreneurship, Project Flame's four key programmes focus on: academic and professional education; student service leadership; innovation incubation; and research and knowledge transfer.

A keen researcher, Mark recently led the research team that developed Hong Kong's Social Enterprise Endorsement Mark in partnership with the Hong Kong General Chamber of Social Enterprises.

Previously, from being the sole teacher in a one-room school in Labrador, Mark studied anthropology at the LSE. Later he managed various community and hospital services in the UK before being appointed as the CEO of the London Emergency Bed Service. 

Mark's past consultancies include developmental work with governments in China, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and the UK and with the World Bank in Indonesia.
