About the Event:

Every year, 3 million newborns die, mostly due to preventable issues. Dr. Shaun Morris has a potential solution - a Neonatal Survival Kit, part of a community-based trial being conducted in Pakistan and Kenya. The kit contains basic items and when brought up to scale, would cost $1-$2 USD, making it a very efficient life-saving solution. Hong Kong based children's clothing company, Baby Hero, is helping fund these kits with the sale of their products but as they scale up to reach thousands more families, the doctors are exploring a variety of ways to bring this intervention to the potentially millions of families it could help.

About the Speakers:

Dr. Shaun Morris
Clinician-Scientist, Division of Infectious Diseases
Scientist-Track Investigator, Centre for Global Child Health

Dr. Shaun Morris is a Clinician-Scientist in the Division of Infectious Diseases and a Scientist-Track investigator in Centre for Global Child Health at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. He is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics is cross appointed to the Division of Clinical Public Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Dr. Morris completed his medical degree at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, and his Master's in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. His clinical training in pediatrics and infectious diseases was at SickKids and his training in tropical medicine was at the Gorgas Memorial Institute and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia Instituto de Medicina Tropical in Peru. His current research focus is childhood mortality and morbidity from infectious diseases both globally and in Canada. He is currently the PI of large scale clinical trials in Canada, Pakistan, Kenya, and co-PI of a trial in Bangladesh.Dr. Morris’ has been awarded an early career development award by the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program and his research is funded by the Grand Challenges Canada, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the March of Dimes.

Samar Shaheryar
Co-Founder, Baby Hero

Samar Shaheryar is the Co-Founder of Baby Hero, a Hong-Kong based ethical children's clothing company dedicated to reducing infant mortality while maintaining a sustainable supply chain. After studying International Relations at Tufts University, Samar was an investment banker at JP Morgan for 10 years in New York City. Concurrent to her job, she co-founded and ran the youth arm of the charity Developments in Literacy, which educates girls in Pakistan. In Japan and Hong Kong she founded Tokyo Helps and Hong Kong Helps, fundraising organizations dedicated to raising money for emergency disaster relief. She is a passionate entrepreneur, interested in finding business solutions to the world's most pressing social problems, especially those affecting marginalized populations.
