The Paris Agreement, which came into force on 4 November 2016, applies to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). All signatories are committed to limiting the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels, while pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees in order to stave off the irreversible consequences of climate change.

As a responsible member of the global community, Hong Kong is obliged to draw up its own long-term decarbonisation strategy up to 2050 by 2020, and review our climate change efforts every five years. The HKSAR Government has therefore invited the Council for Sustainable Development to launch a territory-wide public engagement exercise to gauge the views of the public and different stakeholders in formulating an aspirational yet achievable deep decarbonisation strategy, charting practical pathways, and mobilising stronger climate mitigation actions across different sectors of the society, thereby contributing to the global decarbonisation effort.

Following the launch of the public engagement on 14 June 2019, this briefing session aims to engage business leaders and practitioners to leverage their expertise and insights on possible climate mitigation actions to reduce carbon emissions in the Hong Kong context. Discussion topics will include the transition towards low-carbon lifestyles, reducing energy use and further decarbonising electricity generation and the development of low carbon transport, amongst others.
