Ma On Shan Mine Tour
Presented By The Natural Resources Committee

Overview:

Hong Kong’s mines are not only rich in treasures of the earth, but also in its stories. From humble beginnings to its operational peak, to being almost forgotten in today’s society, Hong Kong’s mines have been making a steady comeback in the form of revitalisation and the sharing of its history. To find out more about this fascinating piece of Hong Kong’s past, check out Post Magazine’s article on Hong Kong’s abandoned mines, and then join us in exploring one for yourself at Ma On Shan in a tour guided by geology expert Jackie Chu.

About the event:

Join us on a tour of the Ma On Shan open pit and underground iron mine. As the biggest iron mine in Hong Kong, Ma On Shan Iron Mine operated for 70 years from 1906 to 1976. During its peak, the annual production reached 400,000 tons and exported to Japan.

Afterwards, we will explore Ngong Ping, Luk Chau Shan and enjoy the panorama of Sai Kung over lunch.

At the end of the day, we will visit Grace Youth Camp in Ma On Shan village to learn about the history and culture of the old mining village. The refurbished Grace Youth Camp preserves the history of mining of Ma On Shan. The complex allows public visitors to explore the industrial, cultural and religious heritage of this historical settlement.

The registration fee covers round trip transportation from Central Post Office (meeting point) to Ma On Shan, lunch, and guided tour in English throughout the day.
