Canadian Commemorative Service in Hong Kong

The Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong holds an annual commemoration ceremony at the Sai Wan War Cemetery.

The Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong holds an annual commemoration ceremony at the Sai Wan War Cemetery.

The Canadian Commemorative Ceremony honours the 1,975 Canadian soldiers who bravely fought to defend Hong Kong during the Second World War and remembers the 550 who died here, in battle or captivity. Held annually at the Sai Wan War Cemetery since 1947, this important event takes place on a Sunday in early December, representing the start of hostilities in Hong Kong on December 8, 1941. It was in Hong Kong that Canadian soldiers first committed to battle in the Second World War.  They were the last to come home.

Every year, veterans of the Second World War join Canada’s Consul General and leading members of the Canadian community in Hong Kong to pay their tribute and lay wreaths.  Youth involvement through the participation of the four Canadian curriculum schools in Hong Kong and Macao, the 1st Hong Kong Canadian Scout Group and the Hong Kong Adventure Corps, is a highlight of the programme.

Date: December 4, 2016 (Sunday)
Venue: Sai Wan War Cemetery, Cape Collinson Road, Chai Wan, Hong Kong (map)
