About the Event:
The pace of change and rate of innovation in today’s society is forcing universities to choose between reform and renewal or the risk of irrelevancy.

The University of Waterloo has pioneered a unique approach to education. It centres on providing students and faculty with a deeply experiential, research-intensive, and entrepreneurial environment to develop human capital and mobilize innovative research that drives prosperity. Combined with its decision to lead the world in several key frontier disciplines and be Canada’s most internationalized university, Waterloo has developed a university model for the 21st century. President Feridun Hamdullahpur will discuss what makes Waterloo’s model unique and vital, and share how Waterloo’s researchers, students, and alumni are developing solutions tailored to today’s global risk landscape.

These topic areas include cyber security, an aging population especially in developed countries, the problem of under- and un-employment among youth, and the need to foster industry-community-academy links that drive prosperity while respecting academic freedom.

Many of these issues directly affect the business community in both Canada and Hong Kong, and Waterloo’s track record is clear: it has the ability and energy to bring valuable, innovative solutions to the table.

About the Speaker:
A professor of mechanical engineering, Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul,Turkey and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia.

Throughout his career spanning over 35 years, Dr. Hamdullahpur has been an active researcher in thermo-fluids and energy engineering, a passionate teacher and an academic administrator. He has authored hundreds of scientific and academic publications and supervised over 50 graduate students. He was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in June, 2014.

President Hamdullahpur’s central motivation is ensuring that the impact of university education, research and scholarship on our broader society is maximized through constant reform and innovation in the higher education sector. He is a leading advocate for the value of basic research and its relevance to educational excellence and economic prosperity.

His current focus at the University of Waterloo is expanding its lead in innovation, building on Waterloo’s long-standing and emerging strengths in co-operative education, research, entrepreneurship, and equity. For the last nearly three decades, Waterloo has dominated Canadian university innovation rankings. Its goal is to be recognized as one of the top innovation universities in the world. In 2014, Waterloo was named Best Overall University in Canada.
