Mamdouh Shoukri
C.M., O.Ont., PhD, FCAE, P.Eng.

Mamdouh Shoukri was appointed the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of York University on July 1, 2007.

Dr. Shoukri began his career in academia at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where he joined the faculty in 1984. In 1990, he was appointed Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, and eventually became Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1994-2001. During his term as Dean, the Engineering Faculty enjoyed significant growth, which paved the way for McMaster to become one of the leading engineering schools in Canada. Dr. Shoukri went on to serve as Vice-President Research & International Affairs. Under his leadership, McMaster was designated Research University of the Year in 2004 by Research Infosource Inc. He was also responsible for creating and implementing the vision for the McMaster Innovation Park (MIP), by building partnerships with the provincial and federal governments, the City of Hamilton, the community and local industry. The MIP has proven to be a major innovation hub and a catalyst for the region’s economic recovery.

Prior to joining McMaster, Dr. Shoukri launched his career in the Research Division of Ontario Hydro (1977-1984), where he was responsible for industrial research.

In addition to his roles at York, Dr. Shoukri serves on the Ministry of Industry’s Space Advisory Board, the Boards of Directors of Universities Canada and the Loran Scholars Foundation, and is Chair of the Government and Community Relations Committee for the Council of Ontario Universities. He is a member of the Standing Advisory Committee on University Research (SACUR) for Universities Canada, and was a founding Board Member of the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) and a member of the Ontario Research and Innovation Council (ORIC).

For his contributions to the flourishing of Ontario’s academic institutions as both an engineer and an administrator, Dr. Shoukri was named a Member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario in 2013, and awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal. He is a Senior Fellow of Massey College, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. His professional memberships include the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Dr. Shoukri’s scholarly interests are in thermo-fluid science, and he is the author or co-author of more than 120 papers that have appeared in refereed journals and symposia.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti


Mayor Frank Scarpitti is pleased to lead the Confederation of Greater Toronto Chinese Business Association 2015 China Trade Mission.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti was elected as Mayor of Markham in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

He was first elected to Markham Council in 1985 as a Regional Councillor.In total, the people of Markham have voted for Mayor Scarpitti nine times over 29 years.

Mayor Scarpitti also serves on York Region Council, is the current Chair of York Region Rapid Transit Corporation and is the Chair of York Region Police Services Board.

He is Vice Chair of PowerStream, the second largest municipally-owned electricity distribution company in Ontario, and Chair of Markham Enterprise Corporation, which owns Markham District Energy, operator of four district energy plants.

Mayor Scarpitti gives time to a number of non-profit associations related to health, culture and quality of life programming. As Co-Chair of the Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Capital Campaign his efforts contributed to surpassing the $50 million goal.

He led Markham’s initiative to secure the Markham Pan Am Centre and a new campus for York University.

He is a strong advocate of internet voting in the municipal elections and since 2003 it has been used in all subsequent elections. Mayor Scarpitti has led successful business missions to China in 2005, 2008 and 2012.

Mayor Scarpitti and his wife Nancy have three children.
