About the Event:
The Overall Objective of the Series is to exchange experience about the challenges entrepreneurs, start-ups and small business owners including SMEs face while establishing and operating a business in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific Region. We hope that the Series will be helpful to those who are looking for new ideas, different business strategies, solutions to business problems, or more profitable ways of doing things.

This New Signature Series will consist of six parts mainly of discussion panels.

Part 1: Start-up! Entrepreneurs Overcoming Challenges in Hong Kong

The discussions of the panellists will focus on these areas:

- An overview of Hong Kong's Start-up Landscape by Jayne Chan
- Visa challenges and options for start-up founders and other entrepreneurs by Stephen Barnes
- How to effectively produce and market your own entrepreneurial ideas and products by                Christopher Dillon
- How to find a suitable business partner in Hong Kong by Chris Geary

About the Speakers:

Jayne Chan
Head of StartmeupHK at InvestHK

Jayne is Head of StartmeupHK at InvestHK, the government department responsible for attracting and retaining Foreign Direct Investment into Hong Kong. StartmeupHK is InvestHK’s initiative aimed at helping founders of innovative and scalable startups from overseas to set up or expand in Hong Kong. Their services include providing information about the startup ecosystem here in HK, connecting people to the startup community, hosting startup events and helping to foster a positive environment for startups to thrive.

Prior to joining InvestHK, Jayne was Executive Director at the HK chapter of TiE, a global non-profit network focused on fostering entrepreneurship in the markets in which they operate, and roles in marketing and business development at digital agencies, startup incubator, and architecture and manufacturing companies.

Stephen D Barnes

Long-recognised by his peers as a leading authority on Hong Kong business immigration matters, LSE law graduate Stephen Barnes published the first edition of the D-I-Y visa application guide, Hong Kong Visa Handbook on the internet in 1996. For the 19 years since then, Stephen (aka the Hong Kong Visa Geeza) has been at the forefront of the immigration services industry in Hong Kong.

A regular guest on Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 3, Stephen answers visa questions live on air, frequently delivers Continuing Professional Development programmes to Hong Kong’s legal and accounting professions on the topic of business immigration to the HKSAR and is in demand as a subject matter expert locally and internationally.

Stephen started his first dedicated Hong Kong visa and immigration consultancy LL.B Consultancy straight out of law school in 1993 and his latest venture, the Hong Kong Visa Centre, offers next generation visa and immigration consultancy with all advice and application support services being delivered entirely via the internet.

Christopher Dillon

Christopher Dillon is an award-winning writer and entrepreneur based in Hong Kong.

In 2002, he bought and renovated a floor in an office building in Hong Kong’s Central business district. Since then, he has purchased and refurbished a luxury apartment on the west side of Hong Kong Island and transformed a derelict steam laundry into a multimedia studio.

That experience inspired four books: Landed Hong Kong (2008), Landed Japan (2010), Landed China (2013) and Landed Global (2014). Earlier this year, he published a second edition of Landed Hong Kong.

Christopher lived in Tokyo from 1989 to 1992, when he moved to Hong Kong. A former director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, he is a governor of the Foreign Correspondents' Club.

Christopher Mark Geary
CEO and Co-founder @ BSD Code and Design Academy

Chris is an experienced entrepreneur with 10 years experience spanning the United States, Europe and Asia.

Now based in Hong Kong, and having successfully started and developed 6 companies globally, he is focused on driving growth across diversified investments in for-profit business and social ventures. His businesses, all based in Greater China and the ASEAN region, range from consultancy, research, IT and design education to product design and development, jewellery, and investment management.

His current passion is focusing on youth development and education through use of creative arts and technology.
