About the Event:
Exchange of information for tax purposes is recognized as an effective tool to enhance tax transparency and combat cross-border tax evasion. The international landscape on tax cooperation has changed rapidly in recent years. Hong Kong is facing increasing international pressures for adopting the latest global standard for exchange of information. In order to avoid being labeled as an uncooperative jurisdiction and to preserve its status as an important international financial center, Hong Kong has changed its tax law in January 2010 to enable Hong Kong to adopt in its double taxation agreements (“DTA”) the latest international standard for exchange of information set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (“OECD”) at that time, and in 2013 to enable it to enter into standalone Tax Information Exchange Agreements (“TIEA”) with other jurisdictions.

The trend towards greater tax transparency continues. In 2014, the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax purposes of OECD has collected commitments from its members to implement the latest standard promulgated in July 2014 – standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters. Over 90 jurisdictions have expressed their commitment to implement the Standard by 2017 or 2018. Hong Kong has also indicated its support for the new global standard on automatic exchange of information (“AEoI”) and committed to put in place necessary legislation by 2017 to enable to exchange information in 2018.

The seminar will provide an update of the recent developments and their implications for businesses in Hong Kong.
