About the Event:

Biodiversity conservation is a global issue as greed and politics are affecting the precarious balance between people and nature. However, this balance can be restored in a sustainable way by working collaboratively with local communities on a plan that benefits both people and the surrounding ecosystem. Dr. Clément Lanthier, President & CEO of the Calgary Zoo and the past Chair of the Canadian Committee for IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), will present a community-based conservation approach developed by the Calgary Zoo through thirteen years of experience working with a local African community and with a consortium of stakeholders in Canada. Honoured with the 2008 United Nations Equator Award, the community-based conservation approach is all about innovation and collaboration among various stakeholders, from corporations and non-profits to local people. Don’t miss this global conservation success story and how businesses and individuals can be involved in sustainable development.

Aside from being Canada’s favourite zoo, the Calgary Zoo is also recognized by the prestigious science journal “Nature” as one of the top five zoos in the world for conservation research.
