About the Event:

The inefficient allocation of capital across China’s economy caused by bank dominance of Chinese capital markets, and their preference for lending to organs of the state, has led to the proliferation of multiple types of alternative finance or shadow-banking institutions to fill the gaps left open by the banking sector. This stands in sharp contrast to the USA where shadow banking was primarily driven by the banks as a result of deregulation.

Shadow banking should be a concern for market watchers though, however the tendency to bunch together what are a very disparate range of activities and institutions leads to distorted views on how serious the risks of shadow banking are. It also has many market watchers misunderstanding or, at worst, exaggerating the risk this area poses to the broader economy, particularly in terms of risk overlap with the banking sector.

This presentation will break down the shadow banking sector into its commensurate parts and clarify the nature of the risks as well as the benefits of this area to the economy, with a particular focus on the most misunderstood entities, the trust companies.
