About the Event:

Benefitting from a five digit growth in value over the past year, bitcoin and other digital currencies have been all over the news, triggering the interest of investors but also raising concerns from authorities as the apparent anonymity associated with bitcoin transactions and the lack of regulation for bitcoin exchanges are perceived to increase the risk of money laundering and illegal transactions. Yet the main benefits of digital currencies do not boil down to a speculative opportunity or a way to evade state monitoring. It is effectively one of the most disruptive technologies since the internet and could change financial transfers as much as Skype changed telecommunications.

Aurélien MENANT, the co-founder and C.E.O. of Gatecoin, a global digital currencies financial institution based in Hong Kong, will introduce you to the bitcoin network and explain how it works. He will also give an overview of the bitcoin market, presenting its size, its users and clarifying the roles its different participants have. Aurélien will then describe the regulatory landscape and review the different hurdles encountered by users, businesses and regulators. Finally he will present his views on the outlook of digital currencies for 2014, before opening a Q&A session.

The mission of the Financial Services Committee is to become the premier forum for members of the financial services community of Hong Kong by bringing together members of the broad financial services industry of Hong Kong, including the asset management, investment banking, private equity, venture capital, hedge fund, wholesale and retail banking, wealth management, and insurance industries.

We look forward to seeing you all at our event!
