British Columbia’s Minister of International Trade &
Minister Responsible for Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism


About the Event:

Strategically located on Canada’s west coast, British Columbia lies at the commercial crossroads of the Asia Pacific region and North America. Strong ties with China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines have raised the province’s presence in business and culture.  The establishment of two new British Columbia Ministries this summer— natural gas and international trade — reflecting the importance of growing trade relations with Asia Pacific.  What are the opportunities to increase trade relations with Asia?  How can B.C. secure its place in the Asian markets that will better drive global economic growth?

The Honourable Teresa Wat
British Columbia’s Minister of International Trade &
Minister Responsible for Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism

Minister Teresa Wat emigrated from Hong Kong in 1989.  She was elected to represent the riding of Richmond Centre this May, and was then named to cabinet and appointed to oversee the newly established Ministry of International Trade. Minister Wat also serves as a member of the Cabinet Committee on Strong Economy and the Priorities and Planning Committee.  She was the President and CEO of Mainstream Broadcasting Corporation (Radio CHMB AM1320) and has also served as the News Director at Channel M Television (now OMNI-TV). 

Minister Wat previously served as a communications advisor at B.C.’s Cabinet Policy and Communications Secretariat and was instrumental in the launch of the first-ever live Cantonese, Mandarin and Punjabi daily television news programs in British Columbia. 
In 2010, Minister Wat was appointed to the Canadian Women Voters Congress Advisory Board and was appointed one of B.C.’s Top 100 Most Influential Women by The Vancouver Sun.  She is also currently a board member at the School of Journalism at UBC.

Mr Eddie Wang is a veteran banker working in HSBC for more than 30 years and the former president of China Minsheng Bank. He is the first Hong Kong-Chinese banker who took the top position in a domestic Chinese bank.
