In Hong Kong, we generate a shocking 6 MILLION TONNES of waste every year, but only a small portion is recycled. Our landfills are almost full, and a vast amount ends up in nature. This year we are calling out to all our members and friends to join us in cleaning up our beautiful coastlines. Anyone can participate, and it’s FREE! Together, we, CanCham supported by the CG and CUA, can halt the flow of trash into our precious oceans.
The Hong Kong Cleanup:
- Culminates in the region’s largest volunteer event of its kind;
- Produces the only detailed data report categorizing types of debris found littering Hong Kong;
- Promotes a year-round education campaign to minimize waste at the source; and
- Provides opportunity to share best practice with other committed companies and organizations.
Our Mission is threefold:
To empower Hong Kong residents to become active agents in keeping our beautiful coastal areas, country parks and city streets safe, clean and trash free.
To increase awareness and instil a level of understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental protection.
To advocate for change in policy related to waste management, littering and pollution, and for environmental sustainability to become a greater priority for Hong Kong policymakers.
The Coastal Cleanup Challenge
With its expansive coastal areas, fishing and shipping industries, marinas, boating and water sports, Hong Kong has a special relationship with the marine environment, and as such it is vital for us to take part in its protection. Beach cleanups bring awareness to the vast and vital issue of marine debris, and allow participants to engage with our beautiful coastal ecosystems.
Meet us at 10:00am at the Central Pier No.8 for transportation to Shek O Big Wave Bay Beach. A light lunch will be provided. We will depart Shek O at 4:30pm and return to the Central Pier.
Minimum Age for Participation: 10 and up only
