Financial Services Committee Presents: Lowdown on the Slowdown - is Asian growth over?

Concerns about "slowdown" of Asian economies are now commonplace across the global financial media. But many of us in Asia are skeptical - surely China growing at 7% is actually pretty good news, as if Western economies could match this pace then we would all be celebrating in style.

About the Event:

The Financial Services Committee would like to invite you to an evening of discussion, idea sharing and networking with other members of the Canadian Financial Community of Hong Kong.

We will be joined by our special guest of honor, Mr. Ross O'Brien, the Hong Kong Director of the Economist Corporate Network and a globally acclaimed speaker and moderator at more than 100 events a year.  With the research, wisdom and frankness of The Economist behind him, Ross has a style that is both educational and entertaining.

We will discuss why concerns about "slowdown” of Asian economies are now commonplace across the global financial media whilst many of us in Asia are skeptical – surely China growing at 7% is actually pretty good news, as if Western economies could match this pace then we would all be celebrating in style. Or is there a deeper reality that Asian economies can no longer continue to expand if the rest of the World is stuck in no, or low growth? And should we hunker down, amend business models, and be more selective about where we look to invest and grow?

The mission of the Financial Services Committee is to become the premier forum for members of the financial services community of Hong Kong by bringing together members of the broad financial services industry of Hong Kong including the asset management, investment banking, private equity, venture capital, hedge fund, wholesale and retail banking, wealth management, and insurance industries. We look forward to seeing you all at our event!

About the Speaker:

Ross O'Brien

Ross O’Brien is the Hong Kong Director of the Economist Corporate Network, a membership-based business advisory programme for senior executives of multinationals operating in Asia. In his role, Ross brings over twenty years of industry and economic analysis to bear in providing decision makers with insight and advice on the future of Asia’s economies—and what it means for their businesses.

Ross engages with the boards and executives of dozens of companies across Asia every month, and speaks at and moderates over 100 events every year. Many of Ross’ speaking engagements are for CIO audiences, or for executives interested in the implications of information and communications technology (ICT) developments on their business strategy. At the Economist Corporate Network, Ross focuses his research and analysis on Asia’s Innovation Economy—the intersection of technology and the region’s broader social and economic development trends. He studies the way Asian technology companies build and sell globally, and the ways countries and companies leverage technology investment for competitive success (or how they’ve failed in doing so).

Ross began his career as a telecommunications analyst, covering network infrastructure and enterprise systems markets for the emerging market telecoms consultancy Pyramid Research, in the US and Singapore. He’s worked as an Asian marketing manager for the data switch vendor StrataCom, and a consultant with AT&T Solutions in the US and Indonesia. He also ran the ICT practice for the Asian market entry consulting partnership Intercedent. His technology advisory work has been varied over the years, serving such clients as rural wireless communications companies in Bangladesh, e-government NGOs in Indonesia, and managed network service providers in southern China.

Based in Hong Kong for the past 12 years, Ross has an AB in Asian Studies and Anthropology from Dartmouth College, and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School. He is conversant in Mandarin and Indonesian.
