We will examine people′s different approaches to change, the relative importance of technical and soft skills as well as verbal and non-verbal elements of cross cultural communication in a business setting.

About the Topic:

Hong Kong is a place where East meets West. Whether you are a multinational corporation having operated in Asia for many years or a small or medium sized business exploring expansion to Asia, you have probably found out that working with people from diverse cultures brings both challenges and opportunities.

This short lunch presentation will help you understand the impact of culture on how people think, operate and communicate. We will examine people′s different approaches to change, the relative importance of technical and soft skills as well as verbal and non-verbal elements of cross cultural communication in a business setting.

These concepts and discussions apply to both working internally with employees, managers and colleagues as well as externally with customers and suppliers. Increased cultural awareness and fluency will help people and organizations turn cultural diversity into a competitive advantage.

About the Speakers:

Caroline Yang 

Caroline Yang, CHRP, CCP, has fifteen years of human resources experience with Nortel and Compaq in China and ATI (now AMD), TD Bank, Manulife and MDS Inc. in Canada. She has worked with a diverse workforce and supported multicultural teams of highly skilled technical professionals.

Providing services to a broad range of public and private sector organizations, Caroline has worked with GE Canada, Total E&P Canada, Scotiabank, City of Kitchener, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, University of Ottawa and Ontario Regulators for Access Consortium.

Caroline graduated from City University of Hong Kong with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and a CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) training program at Simon Fraser University in translation. She is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP).

Lionel Laroche

Lionel Laroche, Ph.D., P. Eng., started his career as an engineer. The cultural adaptation process after immigrating to Canada and working on international assignments taught him so much that he decided to use this knowledge to help professionals from all over the world advance their career and organizations benefit from the opportunities brought by a diverse workforce.

Over the past fourteen years, Lionel has provided cross-cultural training, coaching and consulting services to over 20,000 people. He is the author of two books: 

- Managing Cultural Diversity in Technical Professions and Recruiting
- Retaining and Promoting Culturally Different Employees.

Lionel holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, USA and a "Diplome d′ingenieur polytechnicien" from the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris, France.
