About the Event:

The pace of change and rate of innovation in today's society is forcing organizations to choose between renewal or risk of irrelevancy. This luncheon features the President of University of Waterloo, Canada’s most innovative university, and the Undersecretary of the Innovation and Technology Bureau, who will share their views on how innovation and technology will transform today’s businesses.

President Feridun Hamdullahpur will discuss what how University of Waterloo is developing solutions tailored to today’s innovation landscape.Through the three pillars of experiential learning, transformative research, and entrepreneurship, and underpinned by the pure sciences that leads to practical applications, the university produces graduates and nurture researchers to address global issues affecting humanity.

Dr. David Chung will talk about how innovation and technology is crucial to the transformation of our economic structure, so as to make it more diversified and sustainable.Innovation and technology are necessary catalysts and drivers to transform Hong Kong’s economy, to develop high value-added industries, create diversified employment opportunities and improve people’s daily living. This year’s Policy Address and Budget have invested an unprecedented amount of over $18 billion to promote innovation and technology development in Hong Kong.We hope to create a vibrant ecosystem which includes good infrastructure, facilitating policies, talents, entrepreneurs, funds, and the environment or power for regeneration.

Feridun Hamdullahpur
President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Waterloo

Feridun Hamdullahpur was appointed president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo on March 11, 2011. A professor of mechanical engineering, Dr. Hamdullahpur earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Throughout his career spanning over 35 years, Dr. Hamdullahpur has been an active researcher in thermo-fluids and energy engineering, a passionate teacher and an academic administrator. He has authored hundreds of scientific and academic publications and supervised over 50 graduate students. He was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in June, 2014.

President Hamdullahpur’s central motivation is ensuring that the impact of university education, research and scholarship on our broader society is maximized through constant reform and innovation in the higher education sector. He is a leading advocate for the value of basic research and its relevance to educational excellence and economic prosperity. His current focus at the University of Waterloo is expanding its lead in innovation, building on Waterloo’s long-standing and emerging strengths in co-operative education, research, entrepreneurship, and equity.

For the last nearly three decades, Waterloo has dominatedCanadian university innovation rankings. Its goal is to be recognized as one of the top innovation universities in the world. In 2014, Waterloo was named Best Overall University in Canada. In 2015 President Hamdullahpur was appointed chair of the newLeadership Council for Digital Infrastructure, an ambitious initiative to build a world leading digital infrastructure ecosystem for Canada. He is also proud to have been one of ten global university presidents appointed to theUnited Nation’s HeforShe Impact 10x10x10 campaignto engage boys and men in the cause of gender equity. In acknowledgement of President Hamdullahpur’s leadership in education and innovation, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in January, 2013.

David Chung Wai-keung, JP
Under Secretary, Innovation and Technology, Hong Kong

Dr Chung is the Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, assisting the Secretary for Innovation and Technology in strengthening the cooperation with the industry, academia and the research sector, fostering development of innovation and technology to promote development of high-end manufacturing industry as well as enhancing nurture of innovation and technology talents with an aim to create a vibrant ecosystem for innovation and technology. He has almost 30years of experience in information technology strategic management and entrepreneurship development.

Dr Chung worked as Chief Technology Officer at Cyberport Management Company Limited, responsible for taking forward its core mission on IT infrastructure, industry collaboration and incubation platforms for IT entrepreneurs. He also assisted in setting up the first Micro Fund Scheme in HK for young information and communications technology entrepreneurs. Dr Chung was a winner of the "China Top 5 CIO Award" in 2013.
