Going to court is usually not the way people want to spend their time, money and energy. However, many conflicts and disputes seem to end up that way. In fact, there are few people who can
manage to live their lives without becoming involved in a legal action at some point in time. Now Hong Kong has actively joined the many other countries who are adopting mediation as an alternative way to resolve people′s disputes.
Mediation saves people time, money, risk, dignity, stress, and relationships. In addition, mediation may result in settlements which go beyond the legal remedies that a court may allow and there is a high rate of compliance. Come to the lunchtime
talk by Barbara Thomas to hear how you and your friends, neighbors and colleagues can benefit from this process. Her talk will give a brief history of mediation both here and abroad, explain the process of mediation and why it is superior to litigation
in most instances, and answer questions you might have about the topic.
About the Speaker Dr Barbara Thomas, is a Hong Kong accredited Mediator with a Family Law specialty who has over 25 years of experience in Hong Kong and the United
States as both a mediator and a litigator handling complex family law disputes and other form of litigation. She served at the Chair of the San Francisco Bar Family Law Assn., the California Family Law Section Executive Committee, and as Chair of a
California State Bar Committee writing family law legislation, as well as on a court panel mediating complex Family Law cases prior to trial. After over 15 years as primarily a family law litigator, she now believes that mediation is the best alternative
to conflict resolution, especially in the area of family law, where most people will have to continue to interact with each other for many years if they had children in common, and where emotions tend to run much higher than in other forms of legal conflicts.
She has had experience mediating both family law and other civil cases including landlord-tenant, tax and employment cases. Her practice in Hong Kong is devoted solely to mediation, where she is able to mediate both general civil litigation cases and
family law disputes.
