The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in partnership with the Department of Management Sciences of City University of Hong Kong announce the results from the first ever Hong Kong Sustainable Development Index Survey (HKSDI).

What is HKSDI and what does it measure?

In this first year of the survey, Hong Kong scored 56.4, a baseline number against which future change can be measured.  The HKSDI will annually survey our progress on key economic, environmental and social priorities; areas that are important for furthering the sustainable development of Hong Kong.

What are the overall objectives of the HKSDI?

1) To assess the importance of Sustainable Development (SD) issues to the HK community;

2) To determine what the SD issues means to  HK community;

3) To track community perceptions on the importance of the SD issues and progress in managing these issues in HK; and

4) To raise awareness of the important role of the SD issues in furthering SD in Hong Kong.

Who is responsible for HK's sustainable development?

Sustainable development involves the community, business and government striking a balance that enables Hong Kong to achieve a vibrant economy, social progress and better environmental quality.  To improve the quality of life of all members of the Hong Kong community, we seek to identify areas of concern to enable balanced, sustainable development.

What areas of concern are identified as key elements for HK's balanced, sustainable development?

The HKSDI 2003 identified 10 top priority areas:

1) Educational System

2) Healthy Economy

3) Health & Hygiene

4) Environmental Protection

5) Caring & Ethical Employers

6) Urban Planning

7) Community Spirit & Well-being

8) Population Policy

9)Civil Liberties & Human Rights

10) Integration with the Mainland

What are the 2 most important areas?

Of the ten priority areas, education system and healthy economy are deemed the two most important issues by survey respondents.
